With the big 4th of July celebration a few days away, plans for picnics, parades, and fun are being made and of course…the perfect patriotic wardrobe is on top of that planning list. Since all previous 4th of July celebrations, at our house, have been without a little girlee to doll up, our patriotic wardrobes have consisted of flag t-shirts and denim shorts. Gotta love boys!!!
So…with all of that being said, I knew my little ladies first 4th of July celebration outfit had to consist of something VERY girlee and ruffly. With this in mind, I knew exactly what I wanted to make as soon as I walked into the FABulous Ribbon Retreat to grab fabric for another project, and heard the Chevron fabric calling my name! π
This little 4th of July Ruffle Onesie was so easy and fun to make. It could also be made with any fabric for everyday wear, or with other festive fabric to celebrate any season, holiday, or occasion. Grab your onesie, fabric, a little ric rac and ribbon and you are ready to create some EXPLOSIVE cuteness.
Supplies:
Onesie
*Mine is a 3-6 month. I bought it at Wal-Mart. π
1 yard each of two coordinating Fabrics (you will have leftovers)
*I used Navy/White and Red/White Chevrons-Medium from Riley Blake.
Ric Rac
*I used Red Jumbo
Ribbon
*I used Dark Navy with White Polka Dot
Let’s get started:
1. The first thing I did was measure from where I wanted the ruffles to start to where I wanted the ruffles to end on my baby. I am sorry I do not have a picture…she was sleeping when I measured her.
You could also lay your onesie out and guess-timate. π
You will then determine how many ruffles you want and the width of ruffles you prefer. I wanted to have 4 ruffles so I took my measurement, which was 13.5 and rounded up to 14, which I then divided by 4 to get 3.5.
This is how I figured the widths of my ruffles from there…
1st ruffle – 14″ in width
2nd ruffle – 10.5″ in width (14-3.5=10.5)
3rd ruffle – 7″ in width (10.5-3.5=7)
4th ruffle – 3.5″ in width (7-3.5=3.5)
NOTE: I wanted my ruffles to be full, so my ruffle strips were the full lenght of the yard of fabric.
2. Fold your fabric in the widths you calculated above and place them on your onesie (or as close to it as you can), to determine placement and to make sure your ruffles look the way you want.
(I had some scrap chevron fabric that made laying the fabric on the onesie much easier.)
NOTE: After laying the fabric one the onesie, I decided I only wanted three ruffles. Instead of using 14″ for my first ruffle, I used 10.5″. Phew, I would have wasted some beeeeautiful fabric.
3. Cut your strips, that will become your ruffles, using your measurements from above.
4. Hem each of your strips.
5. Put a basting stitch at the top of each of your strips.
6. Very carefully, pull one of your pieces of thread from your basting stitch and pull. This will create your ruffle. Do this to all of your strips.
7. Put right sides of fabric together and sew ends of strips together.
8. Turn ruffles right side out and place them inside of each other. Hold onto the top of your ruffles and adjust to your desired look.
9. Pin the top of the ruffles together.
10. Place the onesie inside of the ruffles in desired location, adjust ruffles, and pin ruffles to onesie.
11. Carefully sew ruffles to onesie. Make sure you do not sew the onesie to itself. π
NOTE: I used elastic thread in my bobbin for ease in getting the onesie on and off of my little girl.
12. Pin and sew ric rac onto the top of the ruffles. You can add the ric rac in the above step, as well.
13. Tie a basic bow and place in desired location. I actually pinned the bow on so I could remove it for washing purposes….or to change later if I want to. π
Yay…you are all done! Great job!
I think she likes it and now…she is ready for all the 4th of July fun!!! π
Happy Creating!
