Birdie Sling Bag

Hi Everyone!  I’m Mandy and I blog over at the super-cool Sugar Bee Crafts – be sure to check it out!  I am really excited to be here at The Ribbon Retreat during The Bag Lady Series because I just LOVE making bags!  They are something you can use to really express yourself in fabric and actually put your item to use day in and day out.
Today I want to showcase The Birdie Sling Bag – it’s awesome:

I have come up with my own bag patterns in the past, but I also love sewing from established patterns.  Did you know that The Ribbon Retreat sells patterns for bags and totes?!  They do!  I have been eyeing the Birdie Sling pattern from Amy Butler for quite a while, and when I saw that in the selection at The Ribbon Retreat, I knew that’s what I would sew.  If you are looking for a big, catch-all bag, this is it!

The fabric I used is from the Spring House collection from MODA and I just love it.  I grabbed it from The Ribbon Retreat along with the pattern.  I am in love with the fabric and I think the bag really showcases it and lets the fabric be the star of the show.

I thought the pattern was easy to follow and sew.  There were only a few pattern pieces, which is awesome.  I put it together in just a couple of days in the evenings.

The details are great – I love the pleats and top stitching.  It really makes for a nice, professional-feeling finished bag:

As you can imagine, the pattern calls for a couple of nice large pockets on the inside.  I love pockets on the inside of my bags, so I was glad they were included in the pattern.

I wish I could show you this bag in person – tons of room!!  I think the sewing level is a confident beginner – if you’ve started sewing and want to push yourself just a little, try it!  If you want a different-style of bag, be sure to check out the pattern selection at The Ribbon Retreat.
