Do you own a bin, box, or closet FULL of Halloween costumes that were worn only once? AND…not only worn once but worn for only a couple of hours? Today we are going to learn how to turn those costumes into FABulous new Halloween night attire.
I happen to have a costume bin that is full of superhero costumes that were perfect for my little fellas on previous spooooooky Halloween nights. However, now that we have an adorable little girlee, those superhero costumes aren’t really what I had in mind for her first Halloween bash. But…we do have one costume, that isn’t a superhero, that I love and knew would work perfectly for our little ladies big night on the town. 🙂
When my oldest son was a baby, we were trying to decide what he was going to make his Halloween debut in when my eye caught sight of the most adorable duck costume at Old Navy. Unfortunately, he did not share my love for Mr. Duck, and he was a little bothered all night long with his costume. He doesn’t look exceptionally happy does he? Hehe!
Due to my love for this costume, I thought it would be super fun to transform it into a feminine little lady and dress our cute little miss in it. However, she too, unfortunately, is not in love with being a duck either.
As you can tell in the above pictures the duck, although super cute, is definitely a little on the masculine side. And as you can also see, my little girlee is giving me a look I am sure I should be highly concerned about and the fact that she has mastered it at such a young age. YIKES! 🙂
This costume makeover was super easy to do and took me only about 30 minutes to complete. All you need is a couple of supplies, and you are set to turn that frown upside down.
All I used to transform our duck was…
Tutu, I used a Baby Fairytale Tutu in Hot Pink. You could also make your own Tutu with this fantastic Tutu tutorial.
Korker Ribbon, I used 6 strands of Shocking Pink.
Polka Dot Ribbon, I used Shocking Pink with White dots.
Grosgrain Ribbon, I used Shocking Pink.
I first put the tutu, as is, on my little girl. She is 9 months old but is still pretty small so after seeing how long the tutu was on her, I decided to trim it up so it would be much shorter and more full.
However, you could leave it long or trim it up a tad, like I did.
I wanted to add a little more feminine flair to the tutu so naturally I went for a bow. You could create any bow to add to your tutu, but I chose to use a basic bow.
Just like the picture above shows…
First tie a basic bow with the solid ribbon and the polka dot ribbon. (I tied my polka dot bow a slight bit smaller than the solid bow.)
Hot glue the polka dot bow to the solid colored bow and then hot glue the stacked bows directly to the tutu.
Trim the bow/ribbon tails to your desired length.
Last but definitely not least…I wanted to add a big girlee bow to her costume to ensure this duck was all girl! I love the korker bows and knew this bow would make the duck look even more girlee and FABulous!
She also loves the korker bows and couldn’t wait for me to make her one. In fact, she was a great helper by sucking on and then handing me my ribbon supplies. 🙂
To make my korker bow, I followed Brynde’s Pumpkin Korker Bow tutorial. See it here. It is so easy to follow along and to learn how to make this fun, frilly, curly bow!
After completing my korker bow, I hot glued it to the costume. I placed my korker bow right in front of the duck’s ear.
AND…
WaLaaaaaaaaaaaaa…We have an adorable GIRLEEEEEEE duck costume.
I can’t tell if my little girl is in love with the transformation or if she is still undecided about being a duck. I am, however, in LOVE with this costume and of course I think my little lady looks adorable!
While the little duck was posing, she fell down on her bottom and our dog immediately ran to her to make sure all was well. So cute and so tender! 🙂
You can use this simple tutorial to makeover any costume for one of your little girlee’s. It is so much fun to reuse a used costume you already have hanging in the closet and transform it with a whole new look in about 30 mins. Your trick or treater will look amazing, you will feel so proud, and best of all…you had a BLAST doing it!!!
Happy Creating & Happy Costume Makeovers!
