Before we get making this fun bow, let’s talk about some basic bow making rules or better yet…tips to help you achieve gorgeous and professional looking hair bows!

Hair Bow Making Tips
When making hair bows, it is best to use the right size of ribbon for the right size of hair bow. For example, using a 3/8” ribbon to make a 5” bow, may not work well.

The following is to give you a general idea of what size ribbon works best for what size bow.

Hair Bow Making TipsA
Using The Hair Bow Maker

There are two lines on the Hair Bow Maker. The longer line is the center line. The second, shorter line is the ½” line. When you have the Hair Bow Maker in front of you, this line should be to the RIGHT of the center line. The first set of holes from the center of the bow maker will make a 2” bow. Move each dowel over one and you will have a 3” bow. Move each dowel over two and you will have a 4” bow, etc.

The bow maker will make bows over 6 inches in width. If you want to make a 2 ½”, 3 ½”, 4 ½”, or 5 ½” bow, then the dowel on the right needs to be moved ½” to the right. For example, if you want a 3 ½” bow, then place the left dowel in the 2nd hole and the right dowel in the 3rd hole. You would use the ½” line as the Center Point for this bow.

Ribbon Length Formula

This formula is a recommendation only. If you find that you don’t have enough, or too much ribbon, make adjustments to the numbers below.
(Width of Bow) x (# of Loops + 2.5) ***The extra 2.5 is for allowances.
Example: For a 4” four-loop bow, your formula would be: 4 x (4 + 2.5) = 26” of ribbon

Ribbon Cutting Lenghts
This technique is similar to techniques used by floral arrangers. But, it works great for Double Ruffle Ribbon.
This technique will be demonstrated on the 3” setting of the Hair Bow Maker using 1 1/2″ Double Ruffle Ribbon.
Have a needle & thread ready (with a knot at the end of the thread).

Now that we have a couple of tips and our ribbon length figured out, let’s get started!

*Please note that my right hand is never used/seen in the pictures below, because I am holding the camera with that hand so the wording in the instructions is sometimes a little different from what my left hand is doing in the pictures.

1. With the WRONG side of the ribbon facing you, place the Double Ruffle Ribbon behind the left dowel as shown. With your RIGHT hand, bring the ribbon across the front of the Hair Bow Maker. The RIGHT side of the ribbon will now be facing you.

2. With your LEFT hand holding the ribbon in center, take your RIGHT hand and take the ribbon around and back behind the right dowel, grabbing onto it with your LEFT hand third finger. Switch places with your LEFT and RIGHT hands so that your RIGHT hand is now holding the ribbon in the center.
FOR A 2-LOOP BOW, GO TO STEP 8.

3. With your LEFT hand, twist the ribbon 180 degrees as shown (this picture is taken BEHIND the Hair Bow Maker).
Once you’ve twisted the ribbon, grab onto it with your RIGHT hand first finger (the thumb is still in front holding everything tight).
TWIST: When you’re twisting the ribbon, you’re simply twisting the ribbon so that the RIGHT side is forward facing.

4. With your LEFT hand, bring the ribbon in FRONT of the left dowel and then back BEHIND the left dowel. Grab onto the ribbon at the back with your RIGHT hand third finger.
NOTE: This loop may be overlapping the bottom loop slightly, but that’s okay. Once the bow is finished, the loops will spread out nicely. Switch places with your hands again so that your LEFT hand is holding the ribbon in the middle tight.

5. With your RIGHT hand, twist the ribbon at the back (the same way as before). Once you’ve twisted the ribbon and are holding it tight with your LEFT hand, take your RIGHT hand and bring the ribbon in FRONT of the right dowel and then around BEHIND the right dowel.
FOR A 4 – LOOP BOW, GO TO STEP 8.

6. Repeat Step 4.

7. Repeat Step 5.

8. With your LEFT hand holding the ribbon together as shown, grab your needle and thread with your RIGHT hand. With the needle at the back of the bow, bring it through the middle of the bow. To make sure you have the center, point your needle downwards so that you can check it with the center line of the Hair Bow Maker. Once the center point has been reached, pull the needle and thread through until the knot stops at the back.

9. Take the needle over the top of the Hair Bow and then under the bottom of the ribbonas shown. At this point you don’t really need to hang onto the actual needle. Just hold onto the thread.

10. With your RIGHT hand 1st finger, fold the bottom center part of the bow slightly back as shown.

11. Hold it back with your LEFT hand 3rd finger.

12. Pull up with the thread and tug tightly. Remove the bow from the Hair Bow Maker by pulling up and off of the dowels.

13. Wrap the thread around the middle of the bow a few times and pull tightly. Keep doing this until there is no more “give” to the thread. Take up a stitch at the back of the bow and then cut the thread. Trim the tails at the back and seal them with your preferred method.

14. Pull all the loops apart and shape the bow. You can either leave this as a basic Double Ruffle Hair Bow and add a knotted or flat center – or embellish and enhance as desired.

And with that…we are all done! Phew! Isn’t this bow so cute and that ruffle ribbon…my fav! I love the six loops of this hair bow and how full it looks. However, like the instructions say, you can even make a two looper or a four looper. I wanted to see how much fun a four looper would look so I whipped one out really fast and I think I love it just the same! What do you think?

And with St. Patty’s Day coming up this week, I thought we needed a little green love happening too so I grabbed some scrap ribbon and WAAAA-LAAAAA! A fabulous green one too! For the center knot, I used some of the same ruffle ribbon. Fun, right?!? That is the best part about hair bows, the sky is the limit and you can do whatever you want!

Green, red, four loops, six loops…it just does not matter! They are all super cute and super perfect for EVERYONE!

What would we do without hair bows? Wouldn’t life and hair just be so boring? Here are a few more incredibly cute hair bows that I just love putting in my little sweetie’s hair.
