Hi everyone! It’s Melanie back from Find it, Make it, Love it. We have loved checking out the boy projects all month and are excited to share one of our own!
Two things all kids like: drawing/coloring, and stuffed animals! We put the two together with this monster pal designed by a 5 year old.
He was so excited to draw himself a toy!
Ready to make one or some for your little designers? Just start by having them draw a simple monster. (You can always give them a few guidelines; like it can’t have more than 4 arms, it can’t be more than 4 colors, stuff like that-to make your task a little easier. : )
Then gather your supplies, from The Ribbon Retreat of course! We ordered some orange flannel, lime green felt circles, and white felt circles (not pictured.)
You’ll also need a sewing machine, batting, liquid stitch, embroidery floss and needle along with any other items according to the monster design.
First step: hand draw the monster shape, copying the child’s drawing. Cut it out and trace it onto the flannel with some chalk. Trace about 1/2 inch bigger for seam allowance. Next cut through 2 layers of the flannel to give you a front and back piece. Set the back piece aside.
Now you’ll want to place the facial features and mark any that will
need to be hand stitched. In this case I hand stitched the mouth and the 3 eyebrows using black embroidery floss.
Use Liquid Stitch to attach polka dots, eyes, and nose.
Next, place the front and back pieces right sides together and pin.
Now sew around the outside, leaving an opening to turn it right side out and fill with batting.
Once you’ve got it sewn and turned right side out, start stuffing the cute little thing!
Once it’s stuffed to your liking, pin the opening shut and sew. The correct way is to sew it by hand, but I can’t make a hand sewn opening look good to save my life, so I just ran it through my sewing machine; and it looks just fine. : )
Ta- da!
It’s cute and soft and very unique! What do you think?!
He loves it and has already asked when I’ll make him another one!
Thank you to the Ribbon Retreat for having us! I’m telling you, they are the best!
