It’s here…it’s true! The 4th of July is right around the corner…WAHOOO! As you know the 4th of July is one of my most favorite holidays! I LOVE the sea of red, white and blue that floods our stores, the streets and the decor in our homes this time of year! The colors are rich and gorgeous and the purpose for this holiday is humbling and brings such a sense of pride. I surely am proud to live in this great nation and LOVE to celebrate America’s independence on this fine, fine holiday! Parties and fun for everyone is an understatement, and I can’t wait for all of the celebrations that will take place in less than a month…hip, hip, hooray! Michele from The Scrap Shoppe also loves this incredible holiday and is helping us celebrate it with a most adorable red, white and blue inspired Mason Jar Cozy that is patriotic and super cute! These festive cozies are so fun and quick to make, all of the people at your holiday party are going to need one…or possible two! Enjoy!
Hello, friends! Michele from The Scrap Shoppe here with a fun project you can use all summer long AND it’s in my favorite colors: red, white, and blue! I love a good patriotic project and this may be one of my new favorites. These patriotic Mason Jar Cozies are perfect for just the family and even more fun when you have guests over for a summer cookout. AND they are super simple to make!
These cozies will keep your hands the perfect temperature regardless of the temp of the drink inside the Mason Jar. I love a functional project that looks good to boot!
Supplies:
Denim (1/2 yd)
Mini Pom Fringe in red, white, and navy (2 yd each)
Cut-Out Stars Ribbon in white, 1 1/2″
Grosgrain Ribbon in red, white, and light navy, 7/8″
Not shown:
Fusible Webbing
Zip Dry Adhesive
Almost all of the fabric I own is remnants. I had several shades of denim to choose from and went with a darker one that was more navy.
The final dimensions of the cozy will be 2 1/2″ tall by 9″ wide. I’m planning on a 1/4″ seam when I stitch it all together so cut denim into 3″ x 9 1/2″ strips. You will need two strips of denim per cozy.
For extra padding we’re going to add fusible webbing to the denim. Cut webbing into 2 1/2″ by 9″ strips and iron down as directed onto center of half of the denim strips.
Cut star ribbon into 9 1/2″ strips. Lay across top of denim strip and tack down 1/2″ from the top edge. Attach by sewing along top and bottom edges of ribbon.
Sewing isn’t exactly something I am great at. I do it for a hobby. So when it came time to attach the mini pom fringe to the denim, sewing was not my friend. I was having a terrible time keeping a straight line on that little fringe so I came up with a different way to attach it – glue!
I used Zip Dry which is normally used for paper crafts to attach the pom fringe to the denim. Zip Dry is a liquid adhesive that dries very quickly and is known for not wrinkling paper because it’s not super wet. And, in this case, kept the fabric perfectly flexible.
Cut pom fringe into 9 1/2″ strips. Lay navy pom fringe 1/2″ from bottom edge of denim strips and glue down with Zip Dry. Layer white pom fringe above the navy and glue down. Finally, layer red fringe on top of white fringe and glue down. Red fringe should hide bottom edge of the star ribbon.
The solid grosgrain ribbon will be used to tie cozies to the Mason Jars. Cut into 8″ strips, 2 per cozy. Pass ends through a flame to seal them.
Time to get ready to sew!
Lay out a strip of the denim with the stars and pom fringe face up. Lay one of the grosgrain strips across the top, allowing 1/4″ to hang off the edge.
Lay a second strip of grosgrain across the top of the denim, hanging 1/4″ off the other edge.
Top with a second strip of plain denim, face down. Pin pieces together for sewing.
1. Stitch 1/4″ seam all the way around the denim, leaving an ~1 1/2″ opening (see arrows).
2. Pull fabric right-side-out through the opening in the denim. Iron smooth and flat, and fold opening in to hide.
3. Top stitch along the top and bottom edges (see arrows) to help keep the cozy flat and smooth and to close the opening that you pulled the fabric through.
Wrap the cozy around a Mason Jar and tie grosgrain ribbon into a pretty bow.
Aren’t these perfect for a summer barbecue? So patriotic and so fun!
I will add that before I let anyone use these I will be adding some Scotch Guard. Hopefully this will prevent any soda or sweet tea stains. Then… it’s party time!
Thank you Michele! What a fabulously fun and festive project! I am in love with this idea and spreading these fun party additions around to guests at your patriotic party! I also love that you could you use these fun cozies all year long at all of your family and friend get-togethers. Wouldn’t it be so great to make some in other colors inspired by different holidays…like red and green for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, brown and orange for Thanksgiving…you get the idea…nothing but total cuteness all year long!
