Do you find that sometimes a project, needs a little extra spice to take it from ok to mighty fabulous! It’s those little extra touches that completes the whole look and feel! Today, Michaela from Covered in Mod Podge is taking a cute Korker Bow and adding a little pizzazz with a little something special to give this festive bow an extra dose of American Pride with a cute strand of red, white and blue star tinsel. Enjoy!
Hey there Ribbon Retreat readers! It’s Michaela back from Covered in Mod Podge.
I am super new to this whole bow making thing. Really, I’m new to the bow thing in general. Having grown up in California, I was not exposed to the big, intricate bow phenomenon. Raising a little girl in Texas, I often feel like I’m a slacker mom for not having Emma’s hair all done up with amazing bows every day. While I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point of super bow mom, I do love the idea of special bows for holidays. Bows are a quick, fun way to add some festivity to any outfit!
For Fourth of July, I created this fun little tinsel bow. I love the extra dimension the tinsel adds.
To make your own, you’ll need:
5/8″ Double Ruffle Ribbon {Navy}
3 different korker colors {Red, Swiss Fun- Red, White, and Royal, and Royal Chevron}
3/8″ Solid Grosgrain {White}
1 1/4″ Flet Circles {Navy}
Single Prong Alligator Clips
Tinsel {I got mine at the dollar store.}
Needle and thread
Hot glue/gun
Start out by cutting all your ribbon lengths. You’ll need six pieces of the double ruffle cut to 3 inches. Cut six korker pieces {two of each color} to 4 inches.
Seal all ends with your chosen method {I used Fray Check.}
Let’s go ahead and make your tinsel loops. I made five connected loops that are all about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. I did this by looping and twisting the tinsel over itself. It ended up looking like a five petal flower. See the above pictures. I think they do a far better job of explaining the process!
Double thread your needle. Fold a double ruffled piece in half. Using one of your felt circles as a base, stitch the ribbon in place.
Evenly distribute all six double ruffles around the circle.
Next secure the tinsel over the ruffled ribbon. Use four or five stitched until its secure.
Now stitch your korker pieces on top of the tinsel.
After all six pieces are attached, knot the thread on the bottom side of the circle and trim.
Cover your alligator clip using the grosgrain ribbon. Then, hot glue the felt circle to the clip. Glue the second circle to the first, sandwiching the clip in.
Now, pull the tinsel loops up a bit to give the bow more height.
Attached to a little cutie and you’re set to celebrate the 4th of July in style!
Whether it’s tinsel, a gem, resin or a button a little added embellishment makes a bow that much more fun!
