Did you know that everything looks better with ribbon? Ribbon can sure add a special little touch of glam, class or even bling to your latest project or home decoration, and Kathleen from Fearlessly Creative Mamas is showing us how much fun it is to hang up pictures with beach inspired ribbon to create an eye catching and one of a kind picture frame. Enjoy!
I’ve been working on my bedroom, trying to change it from a hunting theme to a beach theme. It’s a very slow process and I may finish by the time I move somewhere else. Sad but true. I’m just slow. I decided I wanted to hang some photos I’ve taken from different beaches we have visited, but I didn’t want just the regular photos in frames. Enter The Ribbon Retreat!
I went to The Ribbon Retreat one day and walked up and down all of the many aisles of ribbon. If you like ribbon and can get to Shelley, Idaho, this is the place for you. Trust me on this. It was ribbon Heaven. I picked out the colors I wanted to use, seven in all, and I was off to build my vision.
I went to Home Depot and picked out the pieces I wanted for my frame, which is 5 feet wide by 4 feet tall. I used pieces that are usually used for base boards, but you can pick whatever floats your boat. I brought it home and then enlisted my sweet husband to build the actual frame. The first thing he did was cut the corners so they fit together well. He used a simple piece of paper and a pencil to draw his lines. Then he cut them off with a scroll saw.
To get the frame to stay together, he used a two part epoxy, put the glue on the pieces and then held them together with some masking tape. Notice the wax paper under the pieces with the glue to protect the table. I’m so glad he did that. I just re-finished the table and it would have been sad to have to do it again.
I waited a day before I moved the frame and when I took the tape off, this was the result. I didn’t want all of that extra glue on the frame, so I sanded it off with my electric sander.
Next, I wanted to give my photos a little stability, so I attached them to foam board that I cut to the size of the pictures. I used this glue by Scotch.
As you can see, the foam board isn’t that thick and it doesn’t weigh anything at all. Very light and stable. Just what I was going for when I picked it.
These are the ribbons I picked out. Aren’t they pretty?
The next step was to glue the ribbon to the backs of the photos. I moved the photos around until I had them all where I wanted them. Then I cut the ribbon to the length I needed for each photo and glued the ribbon to the center of each photo.
An important note here is that you must make sure you are getting your ribbon in the center of the frame or you will have crooked photos when you hang the frame.
I used flat thumb tacks to attach the ribbon to the frame. This particular wood was pretty hard, so I ruined a few tacks. That’s okay though, I had a big box.
Finally, I was able to hang my frame. I have a perfect spot in my room that is just a big space that needed some love. I can see this frame from my bed and it makes me happy to see the beach photos and dream of my next trip to the beach.
My husband and I really love the way the frame turned out and we love the touch of the colored ribbons.
I hope you will stop over to Fearlessly Creative Mammas and have a look around. There is lots to see! Until next time, happy crafting!

A little shelf underneath with some beautiful conch shells or other beach mementos would be cute. This is a great project! It’s very gorgeous! Can be easily adapted to any design taste, too (I love Halloween, and collect vintage Halloween postcards–guess what I’m doing soon??!)
You have a great website–glad I stumbled upon it.
