These flowers are so incredible and so very gorgeous…trust me, you are going to be hooked on creating with Ric Rac in about 2 seconds! Enjoy!
Hello everyone, Mary here with some really fun Ric Rac Flowers. I love the variety of Ric Rac that The Ribbon Retreat has to offer, and I’m going to spit out a bunch of ideas for these flowers! Once you start making them you won’t want to stop!
What you need:
Variety of ric rac, I used 3/4 inch and jumbo for my projects:
You will also need:
• glue gun
• sewing machine
• lighter
• scissors
• felt and alligator clips for hair clips, pins for a broach
So what I really love about these is that they are simple, come together fast, and you can do SO much with them!
First off I’m going to show you the flower hair clips I made. I used 3/4 inch Ric Rac for these in aqua, light orchid, white and pink. Some super fun colors for spring and summer!
I cut two 28 inch strands, which made about a 2-2.5 inch flower.
First, start off by braiding the two strands together, they will literally look like a braid and no need for pinning, they stay in place! I braided about 1/3 to 1/2 and sewed and then braided the rest at my machine. Really just preference but it helps it from twisting.
Take it to your sewing machine and sew straight down the middle. I used matching thread here but it’s not necessary because your stitches will be hidden.
Take a lighter and heat seal each end. Roll your strand, gluing with your glue gun every so often. Keep your glue on bottom half of stitches and do not let it twist.
Your flower will look like this now.
Open up your petals by pulling them back.
Cut a small felt circle and attach to back.
I cut some small strands of jumbo Ric Rac in green and folded them up for leaves. You can play around with this part and make different types of leaves.
Sew at ends with your machine.
Attach to the bottom of your flower and voila! Attach to an alligator clip for hair clips, elastic for a ponytail holder, or pin for a cute broach! I’m thinking these would be so cute as a pin for a Mother’s Day gift!
Repeat this process with jumbo Ric Rac for home décor accents! The jumbo Ric Rac is sooo soft and made with great quality!! I made a couple of flowers for some picture frames. You don’t need to place these on felt, you can just directly glue onto whatever you like!
Or, you can even place them together for a grouping on a wreath.
You can also place them on bags or make a cute sash with them, possibilities are endless!! I feel like a kid with a fresh sheet of stickers, I want to stick them on everything!! Thank you so much for reading along, I hope you have fun making your own Ric Rac Flowers!!

I just love ric rac flowers but have never made any before (story of my life- hehe!). But I think I just might take the plunge after seeing the ones you created, Mary, and gawking at the huge array of colors available from TRR! Oh, and your ric rac leaves are too adorable for words!
I don’t own a sewing machine, but I think I’d try basting the braid or tacking it here and there to keep it fairly flat before rolling it.
Thank you for sharing another wonderful tutorial! xoxo
