My name is Katie and I sew over at ChooChoo Skadoo and I love pillows and quilts. When you put them together you have something AMAZING!!! It’s a quillow. I love quillows and I am so excited to be here with The Ribbon Retreat to show you how to make one. I used the Moda collection Giggles by Me & My Sister Designs.

Materials:
2 yards of fabric for the front
2 yards of fabric for the back
1/2 yard for the pillow
2 yards polyester (poofy) batting
Matching yarn
Thread
Basic sewing kit
Take your half yard piece and trim the selvage off. Then stitch down the 2 long sides right sides together.

Turn inside out and press flat.

Find the middles of the pillow and the front of your quilt.

Line them up and pin in place.

Sew down the 2 short sides attaching the pillow to the front of the quilt. You can use a straight stitch or a decorative stitch.

Place the front and the back of the quilt right sides together. Sew all the way around leaving it open where the pillow part is. Use between a 1/4″ to 1/2″ seam allowance.

Lay batting on top of the quilt and baste in place.

Make sure you don’t baste the opening closed.

Turn right side out through the opening and lay flat.

If you have them you can put the quilt on quilting frames to tie it or just lay it on the floor. To learn how I tie my quilts fast and easy visit my blog.

Sew opening closed with a 1/8″ seam.

How to fold the quillow:

Lay with the pocket side down.

Fold over long ways to the pocket.

Repeat with other sides.

Fold in thirds.

Manipulate the quilt until the pillow lays flat.

Easy enough right?!? Wouldn’t this project be so fun to make for your son’s or daughter’s sport teams? I can guarantee…seriously, guarantee that they will love them! They come in handy on those chilly bus rides, and they take up hardly any room! Thanks Katie for sharing such a fun and easy project! These are the worst directions for a quillow I have ever seen.
Hi Pat! Thank you for stopping by! I am sorry you are not happy with this tutorial. I hope you can find a tutorial that is perfect for you. Have a great day and thanks again! Michelle 🙂
I disagree. A friend asked me to finish 3 quillows her mother had started before she passed away. This is the only one I have found that talks about tying. Thank you.
This quillow directions is the best one I’ve seen! I haven’t made a quillow in 20 years & just needed a refresher.
Other directions were too involved for me, I didn’t want to make a quilt before making the quillow. The material you can buy makes it appear like you’ve quilted it all yourself.
Thanks Michelle!

Sew easy. Wish I would have seen this long ago. I’m making one now, but it has 46 sports shirts. Its 5’x5′, w/10 on the back.
Thanks for showing the actual pillow part. Much easier to attach like you show instead of making the pillow first. And the layers are super easy.
However I’m not using puffy batting, I’m using a new mattress pad which I will spray baste to avoid any movement or stretching while assembling quilt. Your quillow construction concept was very helpful.🙂
