Enjoy!

How to Make Headbands and Hair Ties with Fold Over Elastic, The Ribbon Retreat Blog
Fold Over Elastic (FOE) is so awesome!  The name can be confusing as it actually isn’t folded.  It is just soft elastic that is great for headbands and hair ties.  You may have seen this elastic on babies, but girls and ladies of all ages can use it in some way.

Have you seen these hair ties around?  I saw a package of 4 at JCPenny’s for $4.00!  Please don’t pay that much for these beauties! At The Ribbon Retreat we have SO many colors and prints of FOE just waiting to be hair ties! With our price on solid color FOE you could make 9 hair ties for $1.00! That’s $0.11 each!  Printed hair ties would be around $0.14 each.  Now that’s a good deal!!

For a hair tie cut your FOE to 8″.

Solid color FOE is shiny on one side.  That is the right side.

Match up the ends of your FOE with the right side up.

Make a top knot.

Slide the knot close to the end until it won’t go anymore. That is all there is to it! The elastic doesn’t fray so you don’t even have to worry about sealing the ends!
These hair ties are so popular because they don’t crease your hair, they don’t get tangled, and they don’t break! They can hold the thinnest or thickest of hair!

Wouldn’t these make great gifts? How about birthday party goody bags?

Why not make some to sell?  Everyone wants these soft, comfy, non-creasing hair ties!

For headbands you can tie them just like the hair ties or you can glue them.  I prefer glue. I measured my daughters head and made her headbands custom fit to her head. Her headbands were 15″ total length, she’s 4 but very petite.  A guide to go by if you don’t have anyone to measure is:

  • 12-14″ Baby
  • 15 -17″  Youth
  • 18-20″  Adult

If you want to add a Gem (and why wouldn’t you?) 😉 Glue it right where the two ends meet.

The Gem I added to this sparkly FOE is my FAVORITE! It matches everything!

You can never go wrong with Pink!

Any Football fans out there?  I added the gem to the center for a little more Pizzazz!!

I hope you all had a merry Christmas! Now we can get back to our normal schedules and maybe even squeeze in some crafting time!
Don’t be a stranger to FOE!  It should have a place in all our lives!

I love the idea to use them as notebook elastics! I recently discovered elastics to keep your binder or notebook closed and these are SO MUCH CUTER! Absolutely love it!

Hi Emmelyn! Thank you for your question. Whenever I make headbands, bows or pretty much any other hair accessory, I use hot glue! Cherie also used hot glue in this great tutorial to create all of her hair ties and headbands. Hot glue works so amazing…just be careful so you don’t burn yourself! Have a great day and thank you for stopping by! Michelle 🙂
